Engineering a more sustainable future
Industrial - or white - biotechnology is an emerging field within modern biotechnology that uses enzymes and micro-organisms such as yeasts, moulds and bacteria to produce goods and services across a variety of different industries. Industrial biotechnology achieves the goal of sustainability in industry as it uses renewable biomass resources such as starch, cellulose, vegetable oils and agricultural waste, to generate essential industrial products, including chemicals, biodegradable plastics, pesticides, fibres and biofuels.
The potential benefits of white biotechnology and the biomaterials it produces are enormous. The reduction of pollution and waste, a decrease in the use of energy, raw materials and water in industrial processes, the creation of better quality food products, and the production of new materials and biofuels from waste are just some of the claims that have been made about this nascent technology. According to a recent report published by the UK Industrial Biotechnology Task Force, industrial biotechnology has the potential to play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gases and the use of fossil fuels and raw materials, leading to greener and more competitive industries and new added-value products.* These claims are echoed in a number of other recent studies and with the applications for biomaterials continually increasing, now is the ideal time to find out how they can benefit the future of your business.
Intertech-Pira's brand new conference, Biomaterials in Industrial Applications, brings you a comprehensive overview of industrial biotechnology, covering everything from biomass and enzymes to bioprocessing and biochemistry to bioplastics, biopolymers and novel applications and emerging markets for industrial biotechnology. This two day event is the only place to get up to speed with the science behind industrial biotechnology, as well as the practical applications for it. Don't miss this essential opportunity to learn everything you need to know about biomaterials and the bioprocesses behind them to make the decisions that count for your company.
*Please see www.europabio.org for more details on this and other studies into industrial biotechnology.
